Introverts reveal that hybrid work makes them feel overwhelmed
Working in a hybrid environment? Chances are, you prefer to start the workweek at the office. That’s according to a recent survey of 2,002 employees, in which 46% of hybrid workers prefer to start their week at their company’s headquarters, compared to only 20% who favor the comfort of their couch. Regardless of where people work, the results also found Monday was the most productive day of the week (28%), especially among self-reported introverts (39%). Canon USA, Inc. Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of AMLOS (Activate My Line Of Sight), in connection with the launch of an office solution for hybrid work, the survey examines the challenges employees may face in communicating with colleagues and how these vary by personality type. Has hybrid work helped improve employees’ communication skills? Nearly two-thirds (65%) of those who spend their time between their home and office thought so, including more introverts than extroverts (82% vs. 62%). But while 88% of introverts felt a hybrid work environment made them feel like they could break out of their shell, they were more likely than extroverts to sometimes find this work model overwhelming (80% vs. 64%). Regardless of where they work, most introverts chose lack of feedback or communication as their biggest daily obstacle (32%), while most extroverts’ biggest obstacle was too many channels of communication (21%). Overall, nine out of 10 employees found speaking at work challenging, with nearly two-thirds sharing this sentiment when working remotely. Among the reasons? Everyone speaks at the same time (47%), a preference for visual or text-based communication (43%) and not seeing their colleagues at the same time (40%). Video seems to play an integral role in streamlining co-worker interactions as well as improving productivity. Eight in 10 people (1,722 respondents) who have their video on while working say that meetings feel more productive when everyone does. Many respondents also said they are better able to interact with colleagues when they can share documents, images and videos in meetings in real time (66%) and see everyone in the meeting (58%). “As tech continues to evolve, employers need to keep workers engaged,” said Kohei Maeda, Marketing Supervisor, Canon USA, Inc. “Video is one part of the equation, but often requires complementary tools to aid in effective communication in real time.” Seven in 10 (70%) respondents agreed that new technological tools, such as apps and software, can improve communication at work. “Companies should equip employees with technology that can improve interaction and allow everyone to be equally involved in meetings. When everyone is on the same page, regardless of location, they not only feel physically present with the team but are also more empowered to contribute, ” added Meda.
